Form-Meaning Interface in Constraint-based Unified Grammar: Prosody and Pragmatics
نویسنده
چکیده
The present work aims at a formal description of the interface between prosody and pragmatics in the framework of Constraint-based Unified Grammar CUG. It focuses on two main aspects of this interface: (1) intonation patterns vs. speech acts and (2) stress vs. topicfocus articulation. First, four terminal contours are proposed: fall, mid, rise, and high rise. They are then mapped into the speech-act types of asserting, asking, requesting, etc., centering on the grammatical constructions of nonstandard questions. Second, four levels of stress are also proposed: 0, 1, 2, 3. They are linked to the four types of topic-focus articulation: zero topic, topic, narrow focus and contrastive topic/focus. With these prosodic markings, various discourse-oriented data are analyzed to illustrate and support the principle of compositionality for building up of lexical to phrasal constructions as well as various principles and conventions in CUG such as principle of ordering, stress lineup, and TFA composition.

Cross-linguistic Influence at Syntax-pragmatics Interface: A Case of OPC in Persian
Recent research in the area of Second Language Acquisition has proposed that bilinguals and L2 learners show syntactic indeterminacy when syntactic properties interface with other cognitive domains. Most of the research in this area has focused on the pragmatic use of syntactic properties while the investigation of compliance with a grammatical rule at syntax-related interfaces has not received...
متن کاملWHERE PROSODY MEETS PRAGMATICS: REsEARCH AT THE INTERFACE
Pragmatics is the study of utterance meaning, and it is well known that prosody or, more informally, ' tone of voice' can contribute crucially to that meaning. Pragmatic effects in speech are thus the product of both what is said and how it is said, and the two are inextricably linked. However, while many working in pragmatics are well aware of the important contribution of prosody, exactly how...
متن کاملIntegration of Speech and Deictic Gesture in a Multimodal Grammar
In this paper we present a constraint-based analysis of the form-meaning mapping of deictic gesture and its synchronous speech signal. Based on an empirical study of multimodal corpora, we capture generalisations about well-formed multimodal utterances that support the preferred interpretations in the final context-of-use. More precisely, we articulate a multimodal grammar whose construction ru...

This study has aimed to compare the effects of two types of form-focused instruction, i.e. de-contextualized focus-on-forms instruction versus meaning-centered contextualized focus-on-form instruction, on the development of grammatical knowledge of Iranian high-school students. Two groups of male high-school first graders participated in this study. One group was taught through de-contextualiz...
متن کاملWhere is pragmatics in optimality theory
This paper deals with the architectural issues of pragmatics within an overall account of natural language in optimality theory. It is argued that pragmatics can be seen as an optimisation problem described by its own constraint system which lies outside the constraint system that defines grammar (the production oriented OT models of syntax and phonology). Speaking and hearing both involve gram...
